I chose 'folklore fiction' for my graphic novel, focusing on the folklore of my own culture; Goa.
I feel that Goa is often misunderstood by outside media, and in that process, we forget the roots, traditions, and stories this place holds.
So, I decided to tell one of the famous Goan folklore stories of the 'Rakhandar' spirits who are deeply believed in, respected, and even feared in Goa. In my graphic novel, I drew on people's experiences and traditional tales but also connect these with contemporary issues affecting the region.

Rakhandar (राखणदार) famously also known as "Devchar" in Other Kokan Regions. He is A benevolent spirit/ Demigod that protects a specific village, area, or even a single house.
The Rakhandar is considered a source of both safety and the fear to the unkown. Legends describe the Rakhandar as a tall figure, sometimes like a giant, with a white dhoti, a woolen shawl, and a wooden or bamboo staff. Some Rakshandar's are formless, represented by a rock covered in vermilion and turmeric, or simply by a significant tree.
In villages across Goa, a strong faith continues in the demi-god, a protector spirit known by different names-Rakhandar, Denvchar, Hapshi, Khetri, Nas, Mharu, Brahmo, Ajoba.
